The Moongu Moongu Widi Community, located near Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, is a small but resilient Indigenous community. The community is part of the broader Widi group, a traditional Aboriginal group with a deep connection to the land. The population of Moongu Moongu Widi is relatively small, with around 50-100 residents, though this can vary depending on seasonal movements and community activities.
Situated approximately 50km east of Fitzroy Crossing, the community is quite remote, with access to services, resources, and supplies requiring regular travel to Fitzroy Crossing. Fitzroy Crossing serves as the nearest town, providing essential services such as medical care, shopping, and government services, though transportation to and from the town can be challenging due to the area’s rough terrain and limited infrastructure.
Moongu Moongu Widi community leader Delphine Shandley started the opshop in 2023. Delphine is an author and artist.
We are starting a little ophsop here, as it’s a long way to town, and it can be hard to for families to get clothing and items for the home.
