Walungurru

Walungurru, also known as Kintore, is a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory, located approximately 500km west of Alice Springs near the border with Western Australia. With a population of around 400-450 people, the community is predominantly home to Pintupi-speaking Aboriginal people, many of whom are part of the Pintupi-Luritja group. Residents maintain strong ties to their traditional lands, language, and culture, making Walungurru a place of deep cultural significance.

Walungurru is situated in the Gibson Desert, making it one of the most remote communities in Australia. Access is mainly via unsealed roads, and supplies are often delivered by truck or small aircraft. The harsh desert environment brings extreme temperatures, with very hot summers and cold winter nights.

Walungurru School plays a vital role in the community, providing education for local children while incorporating Pintupi language and culture into learning. The school emphasizes bilingual education, ensuring that students learn in both their traditional language and English. Art is also a key part of the community, with many residents contributing to the internationally renowned Pintupi art movement, creating stunning dot paintings that are celebrated worldwide. Despite its remote location, Walungurru remains a strong and resilient community, where culture, tradition, and connection to country remain at the heart of daily life.
