Fitzroy Crossing

The Marninwarntikura Women’s Resource Centre (MWRC) is in Fitzroy Crossing, a small town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Fitzroy Crossing is approximately 400km east of Broome and 300km west of Halls Creek. The MWRC, is a community organisation that serves as a centre of inspiration, providing women and their families with a place for positive change and leadership. MWRC offers a range of services, including activities, mentoring, support, access to culturally sensitive and respectful services, and advocacy.

The Fitzroy Valley, where MWRC is situated, has a population of approximately 4,500 people, with the majority (93%) being Aboriginal and comprising five distinct language groups: Bunuba, Walmajarri, Wangkatjungka, Gooniyandi, and Nyikina peoples. There are 45 distinct communities ranging from larger communities (300 people) in the Fitzroy Crossing town site to small Aboriginal cattle station communities with as few as 10–20 people depending on the season.

MWRC is dedicated to strengthening the power of women and their families to create culturally rich, engaged, and healthy lives for Indigenous peoples living in the Fitzroy Valley and beyond. Their strategic priorities include making Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) history, working towards a harm-free valley, and actively participating in new ways of partnering with governments and other stakeholders to develop positive change with and for communities across the Fitzroy Valley. The organisation distributes resources across the Kimberley region, reaching from Derby to Balgo and numerous remote communities in between.

Stewart Mack – supports communities in the Fitzroy Valley region, and coordinates the collection and distribution of clothing in collaboration with Marninwarntikura Women’s Resource Centre.
