Borroloola

Borroloola is a remote fishing community located on the banks of the McArthur River in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The township is located 670 kilometres east-south-east of Katherine. It is one of the largest communities in the Roper Gulf region, with a population of 755 people. Borroloola includes four town camps within its boundary – Garawa Camp One, Garawa Camp Two, Yanyula Camp, and Mara Camp.

Borroloola is situated on the traditional land of the Yanyuwa people, resting on the coastal plain between the Barkly Tablelands and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Rivers flowing from the Tablelands escarpment to the Gulf regularly flood during the wet season, cutting off access along the unsealed sections of Highway One leading to Queensland. These rivers have also carved out striking gorges through the sandstone deposits in their upper reaches. The region’s rivers and coastal waters are abundant with barramundi, making Borroloola a prime destination for sports fishing. However, the waterways are also home to the formidable saltwater crocodile, adding to the wild and untamed beauty of this remote town.

The Borroloola OpShop operates out of the women’s safe house, offering essential goods to women and their families. In 2024, the community faced a devastating one-in-100-year flood, leading to the evacuation of 700 people to regional hubs. When families returned, many had lost all their personal belongings. In response, the Remote OpShop Project provided donated goods to support the community’s post-flood recovery, helping families rebuild and regain stability.

Mabunji Aboriginal Resource Indigenous Corporation plays a vital role in supporting the Borroloola community, providing a range of essential services, including the operation of the local OpShop, aged care support, outstation maintenance, and crisis accommodation.
