Ngunga Op Shop is located in Derby, Western Australia, a town in the West Kimberley region at the mouth of the Fitzroy River. Surrounded by flat tidal marshland, Derby is one of the more accessible towns in the region, serving as a hub for surrounding remote communities. The population of Derby is approximately 3,300 people, and it is about 220 km northeast of Broome, the closest major town.
The Ngunga Op Shop exists to support children and families by providing clothing and essential goods. The funds raised go towards community support programs, including fabric and materials for language and cultural initiatives. More than just a store, the op shop creates a safe space for women of all ages to build skills, explore their interests, and support their families and the broader community.
Relying entirely on donations, Ngunga Op Shop plays a vital role in assisting those in need. It provides emergency care items and ensures that essential goods remain accessible to everyone. As part of the Remote Op Shop Project, the support received from donors across Australia has been invaluable, allowing the shop to continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people of Derby and beyond.
