Punmu OpShop

Punmu, nestled in Western Australia’s Karlamilyi National Park about 1,310 km northeast of Perth, is one of the country’s most remote communities. This tight-knit township sits on the eastern edge of Lake Dora, a sweeping salt lake known for its breathtaking desert sunsets. With a population ranging from 100 to 150, Punmu is led by a proactive board of directors dedicated to supporting vital local programs.

Already home to a community-managed store—where profits fund neighborhood initiatives—Punmu eagerly anticipates its new OpShop. This additional space will offer residents and visitors a unique place to find secondhand treasures and donate pre-loved goods. Even the region’s challenging climate, which once hit a record-breaking winter temperature of 41.5°C, won’t deter community spirit.

Recently, a sale and sort morning in the HACC building drew enthusiastic participation, despite the limited space. Much remains to be organized, but the momentum is growing. Next steps include securing a Martu coordinator and establishing a permanent venue for the OpShop, ensuring it can flourish as a sustainable, community-led project.

Thank you to all who have supported this remarkable initiative. The Punmu Community OpShop is more than just a store—it’s a proud symbol of a resilient community working together to create a brighter future.
