Tjuntjuntjara OpShop

Tjuntjuntjara is a remote Aboriginal community in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, located approximately 560 km northeast of Kalgoorlie within the Shire of Menzies. Home to the Spinifex people, Tjuntjuntjara is considered one of the most isolated communities in Australia.

Established in 1988, the community was formed when people relocated from Coonana to reconnect with their traditional lands, ensuring the continuation of cultural identity and values. The population varies between 160 and 200 residents, depending on cultural movements, with Pitjantjatjara being the primary language spoken alongside English. Living in the Great Victoria Desert, residents experience extreme temperatures, from with scorching hot summers and cold winters.

Despite its remote location in the Great Victoria Desert, Tjuntjuntjara is a thriving community, managed by the Paupiyala Tjarutja Aboriginal Corporation. Essential supplies are transported regularly from Ceduna in South Australia to support residents. The community is home to the Tjuntjuntjara Remote Community School, which provides education deeply rooted in both academic learning and cultural teachings. The Spinifex Arts Project, a locally owned art centre, plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the unique artistic heritage of the Spinifex people, with their work gaining recognition across Australia and beyond.

Sonya, who coordinates the Tjuntjuntjara OpShop, shares that the community has been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity that they have received from supporters all over Australia.  Waiting for the mail plane is now a highlight of the week!  OpShop sales have supported the development of new community initiatives, including making bush medicine, soap, and experimenting with funky homewares! Thanks to the support of generous donors, the Women’s Centre has been able to purchase six brand-new swags—an incredibly valuable resource for the community.

Tjuntjuntjara stands as a testament to the strength, resilience, and cultural pride of the Spinifex people. Through strong governance, a commitment to tradition, and support from both local and external networks, the community continues to flourish while maintaining its deep connection to Country and heritage.
